Summer Family Afternoon Sat 2nd Aug 1400-1700 Wellow Green

The Wellow Millennium Green Trust needs (modest) funds and help to keep going - cutting grass, etc. This fun-filled action-packed afternoon for all the family will take place on Saturday 2nd August starting at 2pm and finishing at 5pm.  Please do try to come and support this special local green -- use it or lose it!

We are very lucky to have the support of West Wight Sports Centre; the Wellow Millennium Green is hoped to be the first Outreach Centre for the WWSC and the team will be there on Saturday, heading-up the event, and looking forward to meeting you.

You'll see from the pages below that there is something for everyone and the family, from the 3-leggged race (takes me back!) to the Dad's race (or Granddad's Race in my case, how time flies!). All proceeds go to the upkeep of the Green through the Wellow Green Trust Fund. This is one of the Trusts founded by the Millennium Commission; for those interested see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Green

Entry is just £3 on the gate or you can buy a programme for only £2, from local shops including the Village Shop at Shalfleet, or from Shalfleet or Yarmouth Schools. £2 FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY FOR AN AFTERNOON'S ENTERTAINMENT?! Crikey! Next we'll tell you that a celebrity is coming...well, it might happen, but no promises yet, we don't want you to be disappointed.

Car parking is free. It is somewhat limited right by the Green but in only a hundred yards or so,  in the direction of Thorley, just past the Baptist Church,  there is a farm gate on your right hand side leading to a field belonging to Jill and Stephen Cowley, who have kindly made this available free of charge for the day. It's only a hundred yards from the Green. The pdf document you can see below can be downloaded and printed and/or emailed to friends, family and work colleagues. If you are on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, you can use the jpeg image in the link below (click) to attach to a tweet, etc. Let's make this a smashing day! Sandy and I can't make it because our daughter is getting married in Tunbridge Wells on the day.  It's a shame, we would have very much liked to have gone. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0EQpUF-FQ8gaGFEY003dllQbEU/edit?usp=sharing

  1. Does anyone really want to use the Village Green anymore? It seems such a white elephant, it's so under utilised. Surely this is wasting good money. It should be turned into a carpark for the Insitutite as parking on the bend is so dangerous. Where is everyone going to park to visit this event? Who holds the licence for serving the alcohol at this event? Come on Wellow residents sort yourselves out.

  2. I disagree. You don't say who you are, or where you live but the Millennium Green is used. It's a childrens' rec., a safe walking place, a jogging track, a picnic spot in fine weather. It has quite a bit of use, actually. The problem is that those who happily took on the role as trustees are not getting any younger and some have suffered from ill-health so the usual maintenance - e.g. grass cutting - is becoming too much. If enough can be raised to help cut the grass, that would be good. Your comment would be taken more seriously, I think, if you said who you are!

I wondered about the license. Can anyone explain?

  3. I have to say that whenever I go pass on my horse I have never seen anyone there. I agree it's great to have in the village but a car park would be more sensible.
Regarding the license surely someone should hold a license to sell alcohol.

  4. Update: The licence is all covered, no problem. As for the Green becoming a car park, no way! The Millennium Commission tied it up nice and tight, I am told. Any property developers amongst you eyeing it up can check on Magic and you'll see that it is properly registered, and the local people are not going to give it up.

  5. Seems I was not right about mowing being the issue. The need to get some funding into the Trust is mainly to pay for liability insurance; obviously it would be irresponsible for the Trust not to have the appropriate liability insurance in place when members of the public use the green, in case of accident. Also, there is a new committee in place to give the others a well-deserved break. I am told there was no shortage of volunteers.

The focus now it to keep the Green at the centre of village life. If anyone has any comments or would like to share information, history, anecdotes, etc,, either add them below or email to me and I will post for you.
